CLAIRE BEATTIE
Working in oils I am inspired by the gradual tonal shift of the landscape palette throughout the seasons. The paintings, although not always topographical in subject, are responses to specific areas. I am drawn over and over to distinct and solitary features such as single trees, forest lines, fields, distant hills and scattered hay bales which appear again and again in my paintings. I find myself absorbed by the compositional potential of the abstract areas of colour that surround these features such as the umber earth of a furrowed field, the sepia hue of a winter sky, the indigo outline of a belt of forest or the warm stubbled glow of a hay field in late summer. With a restrained palette I build up layers of pigment and spontaneous mark making over a period of time, removing some layers in washes, obscuring others, before the painting itself begins to take shape. I aim to create painterly, visually interesting, yet quiet works that both form and inform the minimal compositions that emerge. I strive to create a feeling of stillness in the work yet on closer inspection the surface of each piece can be seen to have been worked over much like the landscape itself over time. August 2013
