GRAHAM NEWING
Graham is celebrating 61 years as a professional potter having started as a student in 1957, attending Wimbledon School of Art where he recognised his desire to be a Potter at the age of 15. From his first contact with clay he knew that this was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He feels strongly a sense of being a small part of a continuum of thousands of years of ceramic history. Graham loves creating and making, it is very satisfying to be able to be his own master. He enjoys the creation of making the pot from the raw clay. New pots develop exponentially as he works, new shapes are born from each other. Graham can't imagine doing anything else. Thanks to his stubborn nature and a bit of luck, this is what he has done for all of his working life. Graham makes all of his pots on the wheel, with some pieces being thrown in sections and assembled later. His inspiration comes from ideas that he has developed over the years, by observing natural forms and historical shapes of classical Greek and African pottery. There are influences of art nouveau and art deco, of European style. Most of his pieces are decorated using the technique of sgraffito. Graham continues to be excited by working with clay and hopes for a long future!
