SUE HUNT
Based in Wales, Sue is primarily a painter and Printmaker. She has worked for many years as a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art Printmaking at Cardiff School of Art, and is currently a visiting lecturer at Swansea School of Art. Since the start of Covid she has been running a series of Art and Wellbeing workshops with a creative writer for staff and patients within the National Health Services and sponsored by the Arts Council of Wales. Sue has exhibited widely and worked on many collaborative projects throughout her career, both in Wales, and internationally. She has recently returned from a residency in Japan where she made a series of etchings based around the Cherry Blossom season. Early in her career Sue spent a month working with a master printmaker on a suite of offset lithographs in Philadelphia. As a result of an Arts Council Travel Award, Sue travelled to India, where she studied woodblock print and papermaking: whilst there she initiated the start of a long-standing relationship in the form of an exchange program between Wales and Rajasthan. Sue has been involved in the Open Books International touring exhibition, in which she co-curated and installed artist concertina books in China, Hong Kong, India, and the USA. Within her own practice her interest lies in drawing, combined with a strong abstract identity in terms of composition. Through this focus she allows the medium she is using, be it paint, drawing, or etching, to play an equal part. She states: “I don’t endeavor to imitate nature, but to make work inspired by it, and through this, to communicate the spirit of life force coming into being. Subject matter is often revealed through play and exploration of the materials themselves; this, and a fascination with the quiet energy of botanical forms, has underpinned my work of late. The work can be seen as an analogy of life, birth, growth, and fading towards extinction, which we share existentially with the natural world. Life can be brief, forceful, transient, fragile and diverse. It is the poignancy of this quiet reflection I wish to communicate.”
