MARTIN LLEWELLYN
Martin Llewellyn’s remarkable journey from working as a carpet fitter to becoming a highly regarded landscape painter exemplifies the perseverance and dedication of a self-taught artist. His initial return to art was sparked by a Christmas gift of watercolours from his wife, which reignited a long-held creative passion.
Following early experimentation with watercolours, a pivotal encounter with a gallery where his work was deemed "not quite there yet" fueled his determination to improve. While continuing his trade, he converted his garden shed into a studio, where he began working with oils and a palette knife, developing the distinctive style for which he is now known.
Llewellyn's work is strongly rooted in the Welsh landscape, capturing its shifting light and atmospheric moods with bold, expressive technique. His paintings reflect both a deep affinity for his homeland and an approach reminiscent of the classical training found in 20th-century art academies. Influenced by renowned Welsh artists such as Sir Kyffin Williams, Gwilym Pritchard, and Charles Wyatt Warren, Llewellyn draws inspiration from the rugged beauty of Wales’ land and seascapes.
This latest exhibition, the result of 18 months of preparation, marks a significant milestone in Llewellyn’s career and further solidifies his standing as a leading figure in contemporary Welsh art.
