James Donovan's paintings aim to evoke the spirit of the South Wales valleys through their combination of historical and nostalgic symbolism. His use of narrative and escapism has its basis in childhood memories, from which characters and places are reinterpreted and reformed to present stoic, respectful and personal metaphors that serve up myth and legend for future generations.
