HELEN MARTINO
I trained in Ceramics at Farnham School of Art and Central School of Art and Design in London and moved to Cambridge with a young family about 45 years ago. I am lucky enough to have my studio within my house
I love clay and the making, the creativity and having an object at the end of the process. My work is mainly sculptural but sometimes functional. I make the sculptures from sheets of clay that are freely cut and joined to make figurative sculptures within different simple settings. They are usually based on everyday life. The people I see and the friends I meet with in Cambridge and their stories imagined or real. Persian miniatures and paintings by Matisse, Giacometti and Gaugin also form part my source material.
My work is usually based on people, the way they communicate and their body language. I do life drawings to study poses and movement in detail. Perhaps more frivolously, but essential for inspiration for my work, I meet up with friends and go to a lot of films.
