GARETH THOMAS
Gower-based artist born in 1955 best known for his paintings of Wales and Provence. Sadly passed away in September 2019. From the lavender fields of Provence to Pembrokeshire’s rugged coastline, Gareth Thomas’ work communicates a painterly fascination with nature’s forms, colours and moods. One of Wales’ leading landscape painters, Thomas worked as an artist since he gave up teaching after just four weeks to pursue his dream of being a painter. His gamble paid off; his career flourished thanks to the “incredible generosity” of the people who buy his work, many of whom become keen collectors. He achieved something that many artists never dared to try: the ability to change and evolve while retaining the loyalty of those who love his work. Crucial to his painting process were his regular visits to Provence, an area whose vibrant colours and distance from Wales inspired him to take new risks with his painting. A painting of Dolbadarn Castle in North Wales by JMW Turner first woke Thomas up to the common practice of re-arranging the landscape to create better pictures. For this reason, he created faithful depictions of Wales but allowed himself more freedom when painting the landscape of Provence. The lessons learned through that process had a lasting impact on his style.
